A robust mel-scale subband voice activity detector for a car platform

چکیده
Voice-controlled devices provide a smart solution to operate addon appliances in a car. Although, speech recognition appears as a key technology to produce useful end-user interfaces, the amount of acoustic disturbances existing in automotive platforms usually prevents satisfactory results. In most of the cases, noise reduction techniques involving a Voice Activity Detector (VAD) are required. Through this paper, a robust method for speech detection under the influence of noise and reverberation in an automobile environment is proposed. This method determines a consistent speech/non-speech discrimination by means of a set of OrderStatistics Filters (OSFs) applied to the log-energies associated to a mel-scale based subband division. The paper also includes an extensive performance evaluation of the algorithm using AURORA3 database recordings. According to our simulation results, the proposed algorithm shows on average a significantly better performance than standard VADs such as ITU-G.729B, GSM-AMR or ETSI-AFE, and other recently reported methods.

A New Algorithm for Voice Activity Detection Based on Wavelet Packets (RESEARCH NOTE)
Speech constitutes much of the communicated information; most other perceived audio signals do not carry nearly as much information. Indeed, much of the non-speech signals maybe classified as ‘noise’ in human communication. The process of separating conversational speech and noise is termed voice activity detection (VAD). This paper describes a new approach to VAD which is based on the Wavelet ...
متن کاملA Wavelet-Based Voice Activity Detection Algorithm in Variable-Level Noise Environment
In this paper, a novel entropy-based voice activity detection (VAD) algorithm is presented in variable-level noise environment. Since the frequency energy of different types of noise focuses on different frequency subband, the effect of corrupted noise on each frequency subband is different. It is found that the seriously obscured frequency subbands have little word signal information left, and...

The emerging applications of speech technology especially in the fields of wireless applications, digital hearing aids or speech recognition are often requiring a noise reduction technique in combination with a precise Voice Activity Detector (VAD). In this paper, we compare the performance of the VAD algorithms like Zero Crossing Detection(ZCD), Weak Fricative Detection (WFD), Pitch Based Dete...
متن کاملSpectral Subband Centroids as Complementary Features for Speaker Authentication
Most conventional features used in speaker authentication are based on estimation of spectral envelopes in one way or another, e.g., Mel-scale Filterbank Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCCs), Linear-scale Filterbank Cepstrum Coefficients (LFCCs) and Relative Spectral Perceptual Linear Prediction (RASTA-PLP). In this study, Spectral Subband Centroids (SSCs) are examined. These features are the centroid...
